Passing and Failing

After your vehicle passes the MA state inspection, you'll receive a new inspection sticker with a report detailing the results of your test. In the event that your vehicle fails the inspection, you will need to repair it and take it for a re-test within 60 days of the initial test. It is illegal to drive your vehicle before safety repairs have been made. For this reason, it's a good idea to repair your vehicle as soon as possible and to keep recepits of repairs in your vehicle pripr to re-inpsection to show you are in compliance with the law.

After repairing a problem, you can have your vehicle re-inspected for free so long as the retest is performed at the original inspection station. You are entitled to one free re-test. If you don't fix the problems and are unable to pass inspection for the new year, your vehicle's registration will be suspended. View the brochure on what to do after failing the inspection.
